Power Walking the National Senior Games

Race Walking has been an event at the State and National Senior Games (NSGA.)  Starting in 2011 Power Walking will be added to the 2011 Summer Games to measure interest for future medal sport consideration by the NSGA. Power Walking will be a judged competition. Participants may complete in the 1500 meter track event as well as the 5000 meter road event. The rules are:

  1. Athletes must wear appropriate shoes and clothing.
  2. Power Walking is a progression of steps, taken so that the walker makes contact with the ground
so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of foot-to-ground contact occurs. One foot must be in
contact with the ground at all times.
  3. The walker’s knees may be bent.
  4. Disqualification will result when athletes are judged to be running (both feet off the ground at the
same time) in three separate instances by three separate officials during the course of the
    race/competition.

The 2011 Summer National Senior Games will be held June 16-30th, 2011 in Houston, TX. No date yet for the  Massachusetts Senior Games. However, they are usually held in mid June in Springfield MA.

For more information, visit the National Senior Games Association.

2010 Pending Master Race Walk Records

Each year, the USA Track & Field record keepers review outstanding performances by our race walkers. Those marks are submitted for ratification as American Records at the USATF annual meeting in December. Here is the list of the masters race walk marks that may be ratified.

The review process is ongoing and some marks will require additional information like the judge’s signatures, proof of age, or course validation.

Thank you. — Justin

2010 Grand Prix report

Bob Keating and Maryanne Daniel are the winners in the 2010 New England Racewalking Grand Prix. As best as I can determine, this is the 14th consecutive year that Bob has finished first in the men’s category. Points were calculated by measuring a walker’s race time against international age-graded tables. A walker’s four best scores for the season constituted his or her final total. More than 40 walkers from the region took part in at least one of our Grand Prix races this year. We hope for even greater participation with our expanded schedule of events for next year (listed below).

MEN

Four races

Bob Keating 350.89
Tom Knatt 304.37
Stephen Peckikonis 300.17
Brian Savilonis 296.38
Bill Harriman 288.05
Larry Epstein 285.38
Charlie Mansbach 281.08
Barry Fowler 265.92

14 others with one, two, or three races

WOMEN

4 races
Marianne Daniel 318.68

19 others with one, two, or three races.

Our Grand Prix schedule for 2011 includes:

  • Dartmouth Relays 1-mile. NH, January.
  • Greater Boston Track Club 3K, January.
  • Eastern Masters Indoor 3K, Providence, Jan. 30.
  • New England Indoor 3K, Cambridge, February.
  • Clamdigger 5K, RI, April.
  • Seacost 5K, NH, May.
  • National 10K, Albany, May or June.
  • NE Outdoor 3K, June.
  • Bay State Games 3K, July.
  • Eastern Masters Outdoor 5K, July.
  • National One-Hour, Waltham, October.
  • Connecticut 10K, November.

We also hope to include an event in Maine if one is available.

Competitors may also include a result from one other national or international race (such as one of the World Masters events in Sacramento next summer).

Results: NH Seacoast Half-Marathon

The NH Seacoast Half-Marathon was held on Sunday, Nov 14, 2010 in Portsmouth, NH. There were over 1300 registered competitors in the sold-out race.

Congratulations to Dave Talcott and Erin Taylor-Talcott for winning the men’s and women’s competitive walking division of Sunday’s Seacoast Half Marathon

Dave’s time was 1:49:37, and he smashed Theron Kissinger’s (2009) course record of 1:55.58.

This was Erin’s 3rd time at the race, and she set her 3rd consecutive course record with a time of 1:55:43.

30 walkers completed the race. Congratulations to the winners, and to all who finished.

Minutes of annual meeting

New England Walkers Annual meeting Oct. 31, 2010

New England Walkers members agreed at their annual meeting to help sponsor and conduct the Canadian-American Junior Racewalking Competition next summer in the Boston area. Members also reelected officers, received a treasurer’s report, outlined a Grand Prix schedule for 2011, and discussed club clothing, possible racewalking clinics, and the best ways to recognize volunteers and sponsors.

Steve Vaitones told the group that the Canadian-American Junior meet has been held for the past 22 years, alternating between Canada and the United States, but never in Boston. The meet has a 10K for men and a 5K for women and allows unlimited guest competitors, which means that other areas that nurture young walkers, such as Maine and Ireland, could send participants. An all-comers race could be held in conjunction with the meet, with the race fee going toward the overall expenses. The date would be somewhere between the third week in July and the second week in August.

Many tasks lie ahead: finding a site, putting together a budget, scheduling such responsibilities as pedestrian control, coordinating meals, refreshment, and lodging, and managing volunteers. The club voted to declare its interest in helping put on the event and to commit $500 to the cause, and Tom Knatt said he would draw up a chart outlining duties for volunteers.

Tom read the club treasurer’s report submitted by Justin Kuo, which said we have $6,684.49 in our Sovereign Bank account, and then promptly collected $18 more from members who had been lax in paying their $6 annual dues.

Tom led a discussion about obtaining New England Walkers T-shirts and sweatshirts, which he said would make good gifts to race sponsors. Steve said he would explore sources of inexpensive clothing. Members voted to acquire clothing of some kind.

Members also voted approval of a list of Grand Prix races that includes the newly announced Eastern Masters Indoor 3K in Providence on Jan. 30, the Dartmouth Relays 1-mile, and our customary events: the Greater Boston Track Club and New England Indoor 3Ks, the Clamdigger 5K, the New Hampshire Seacoast outdoor 5K, the 10K Nationals in Albany, the New England Outdoor and Bay State Games 3Ks, the Eastern Masters Outdoor 5K, the One-Hour Nationals, and the Connecticut 10K. Competitors can also include a result from one other national or international race (such as one of the World Masters events in Sacramento next summer). Members also voted to solicit other events, especially one in Maine, to broaden the geographic range.

Members discussed having New Hampshire-based Olympian Joanne Dow conduct a racewalking clinic, perhaps at the Canadian- American meet or perhaps at the University of New Hampshire, where she spends much of her time. Tom said he would explore the possibilities with her.

Club members discussed whether to extend complimentary membership to those who conduct or volunteer at races. Beth Katcher said it is best just to thank people, and to waive dues for those whose activities bring in funds (such as volunteering at the Tufts 10K and the Corporate Challenge). On the subject of recognizing sponsors, veteran race organizers Steve Vaitones and Joe Light stressed the value of sending personal thank-you notes.

The club reelected its officers: Tom Knatt, president; Beth Katcher, vice president; Brian Savilonis, member at large; Justin Kuo, treasurer; Charlie Mansbach, recording secretary.

Present at the meeting were Tom Knatt, Annie Montgomery, Beth Katcher, Bill Harriman, Joanne Harriman, Bob Ullman, Joe Light, Brian Savilonis, Ann Neuburg, Ruth Karacek, Steve Vaitones, Paul Schell, Charlie Mansbach.

The meeting was preceded by informal 5K and 10K racewalks on the Groton rail trail and our traditional potluck lunch, hosted graciously as always by Tom Knatt and Annie Montgomery.
