Race Walking has been an event at the State and National Senior Games (NSGA.) Starting in 2011 Power Walking will be added to the 2011 Summer Games to measure interest for future medal sport consideration by the NSGA. Power Walking will be a judged competition. Participants may complete in the 1500 meter track event as well as the 5000 meter road event. The rules are:
- Athletes must wear appropriate shoes and clothing.
- Power Walking is a progression of steps, taken so that the walker makes contact with the ground
so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of foot-to-ground contact occurs. One foot must be in
contact with the ground at all times. - The walker’s knees may be bent.
- Disqualification will result when athletes are judged to be running (both feet off the ground at the
same time) in three separate instances by three separate officials during the course of the
race/competition.
The 2011 Summer National Senior Games will be held June 16-30th, 2011 in Houston, TX. No date yet for the Massachusetts Senior Games. However, they are usually held in mid June in Springfield MA.
