Records checklist

There have been several attempts at American Age-Group records recently. Officials, athletes and event directors are reminded that the event and athletes must meet certain requirements. Here’s a quick checklist.

The race walk must be in an event limited to race walkers only.
You need five Judges if the race walk is on a track . You need a minimum of six Judges if the race walk is on the road.
At least one-half of the Judges must have a National or higher level certification and at least one Judge must have a Master or IAAF certification.
Road courses must be USATF or IAAF certified before the day of the event. For race walks 10 kilometers, or longer, the circuit cannot be longer than 2500 meters. For race walks less than 10 kilomters, the circuit cannot be longer than 1250 meters.
The race walk performance must be made in a bona fide event open to two or more clubs, schools, colleges or organizations which has been fixed and advertised before the day of competition.
Records are acceptable only in events that have been sanctioned by the USATF, a member organization of USATF or another member federation of the IAAF by competitors eligible to compete under IAAF Rules.
For track events over 10,000 meters and road events up and including the marathon, multiple events may be contested simultaneously. The race walker must complete the distance they entered in order for an intermediate time to be considered.
For events longer than the marathon, race walkers may compete at a distance shorter than the stated race distance, but longer than the marathon. The race walker is eligible for records even if the stated race distance is not completed.

2011 Winter Race Walk Clinic at Lexington High School

Bill Harriman reported he has in meeting on Tuesdays with a group of walkers at the Lexington High School indoor track in Lexington MA. His class of several novices and few veterans, has been working on a combination of technique work and interval training. Bill report the class has been doing and he welcomes additional participants. Power Walking the National Senior Games

Race Walking has been an event at the State and National Senior Games (NSGA.) Starting in 2011 Power Walking will be added to the 2011 Summer Games to measure interest for future medal sport consideration by the NSGA. Power Walking will be a judged competition. Participants may complete in the 1500 meter track event as well as the 5000 meter road event. The rules are:

Athletes must wear appropriate shoes and clothing.
Power Walking is a progression of steps, taken so that the walker makes contact with the ground
so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of foot-to-ground contact occurs. One foot must be in
contact with the ground at all times.
The walker’s knees may be bent.
Disqualification will result when athletes are judged to be running (both feet off the ground at the
same time) in three separate instances by three separate officials during the course of the
race/competition.

The 2011 Summer National Senior Games will be held June 16-30th, 2011 in Houston, TX. No date yet for the Massachusetts Senior Games. However, they are usually held in mid June in Springfield MA.

2010 Pending Master Race Walk Records

Each year, the USA Track & Field record keepers review outstanding performances by our race walkers. Those marks are submitted for ratification as American Records at the USATF annual meeting in December. Here is the list of the masters race walk marks that may be ratified.

The review process is ongoing and some marks will require additional information like the judge’s signatures, proof of age, or course validation.
